Obviously regardless of the balls being deflated the Pats handed the Colts their asses in that game...That being said this type of play has always been the Pats mo since Belichick came on...Strange because they are a good team with no reasons to cheat, yet they do it just because.....

It's funny reading the news vines on this story and how the Pat's fan get all ass-hurt trying to make so many excuses...11 out of 12 balls definitely means there is no excuse - they kept 1 inflated in case of inspection...Instead of bitching and making excuses they should be pissed at their team for all the scandals they find themselves in.....

NFL says New England Patriots had under-inflated footballs in AFC championship Game - ESPN Boston

The NFL has found that 11 of the New England Patriots' 12 game balls were inflated significantly below the NFL's requirements, league sources involved and familiar with the investigation of Sunday's AFC Championship Game told ESPN.

The investigation found the footballs were inflated 2 pounds per square inch below what's required by NFL regulations during the Pats' 45-7 victory over the Indianapolis Colts, according to sources.

"We are not commenting at this time," said Greg Aiello, the NFL's senior vice president of communications.

Troy Vincent, the league's senior executive vice president of football operations, told The Associated Press late Tuesday in response to this report that the "investigation is currently underway and we're still awaiting findings.'' He told "Pro Football Talk with Mike Florio on NBC Sports Radio" earlier Tuesday that the NFL expected to wrap up its investigation in "two or three days."

Yet to be determined is what, if any, penalties may be imposed upon Patriots. One source described the league as "disappointed ... angry ... distraught," after spending considerable time on the findings earlier Tuesday.

Part of the investigation that still needs further vetting is how the 11 footballs became underinflated.

The game balls provided to each team for preparation were required to be inspected and approved by referee Walt Anderson two hours and 15 minutes before kickoff, then returned to a ball attendant.

No alteration of footballs is allowed once they are approved, under league rules and regulations.

The balls are required to be inflated between 12.5 and 13.5 pounds per square inch and weigh between 14 and 15 ounces.

"We have been in complete cooperation with the league and will continue to do so," Patriots spokesman Stacey James said.

The NFL began looking into the issue because doctoring the footballs could provide a competitive advantage, compromising the integrity of the game.

Deflating a football can change the way it's gripped by a player or the way it travels through the air. Under NFL rules, each team provides balls each game for use when its offense is on the field. The balls are inspected before the game by the officiating crew, then handled during the game by personnel provided by the home team.

Colts tight end Dwayne Allen, however, said on Twitter that the issue still didn't affect the outcome of the game.

Dwayne Allen said:
@NFLonFOX not a story. They could have played with soap for balls and beat us. Simply the better team. We have to continue to build! #BTM

Patriots coach Bill Belichick earlier Tuesday deferred questions about the investigation, saying reporters should ask league officials. Belichick earlier said he wasn't aware there was an issue until Monday morning and promised to "cooperate fully with whatever the league wants us to, whatever questions they ask."

Belichick, of course, was fined $500,000 in 2007 for having an assistant spy on the New York Jets' defensive signals.

Special teams captain Matthew Slater said the Patriots "try to do things the right way. We work hard at our jobs, our professions, to be successful and it's unfortunate that things like this come up, but that's life, that's the world we live in."

Colts coach Chuck Pagano said he did not notice issues with the football and didn't specify when asked whether the Colts had reported the issue to officials.

"We talk just like they talk to officials [before the game]," he said. "We have an opportunity to talk to the officials about a lot of things."

Some Colts players -- punter Pat McAfee and cornerback Darius Butler -- took to Twitter on Tuesday night to give their spin on the situation.

Pat McAfee said:
If New England was to be DQ'd.. We'd be their replacements right??... I should probably lay off these strawberry margs

Darius Butler said:
@nfl So we get to play the game again or nah?

Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman said the footballs didn't feel different than usual.

And defensive tackle Vince Wilfork seemed amused by the matter and didn't shed any light on it.

"I don't know anything about that," he said. "I don't touch footballs. I tackle people."

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers said on his ESPN Milwaukee radio show that he didn't like how referees who inspected balls before games take air out of the balls.

Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice voiced his opinion on Twitter, saying that all but one football being underinflated was too much of a coincidence.

Jerry Rice said:
11 of 12 balls under-inflated can anyone spell cheating!!! #Just Saying

Yup, they definitely got caught cheating, again. Belichick must be a fan of Malcolm X, because he obviously believes in the idea of "By any means necessary", even when it's not actually necessary.

That is the shame of it, it just wasn't necessary and really how much difference does it make?

Can't believe the league/officials don't have control over the balls at all times. Each team bringing their own game balls and using them on offense is set up to be fishy.

Big difference. Mark Brunel was saying on Sportscenter this morning that he could throw an under inflated ball 10 yards farther easily. Also allows more control and accuracy because the QB can grip the ball better during his throwing motion. Easier for the receiver to catch as well due to the give and compliance when it hits the receivers hands. Gives the RB more control of the ball while he's carrying it because he can squeeze it tighter and keep more positive control of it while running and being hit.

There's a long list of benefits to under inflating the ball. Some teams will actually over inflate their practice balls to make them even harder to throw and catch, so that properly inflated game balls seem easier to control by comparison.

One report suggested they may have been doing it during the regular season as well.

Wasn't it Al Davis who said, "Just win, baby"?

And as a Pats fan I do not make excuses for this stuff nor do I condone it.

The NFL should provide all the balls and both teams should use the same balls.

As I said I done condone cheating. but now we have former players coming out and saying this has been done in the past. Brad Johnson paid someone to do it in the SB etc.

Funny, the fans and media don't get this upset when teams are stealing signs in baseball or using too much pine tar or even a foreign substance by a pitcher.

In Nascar teams try to get every little advantage they can in their races.

This type of shit happens all the time. Guess Belechick is just not that smart cause he keeps getting caught.

Anyway, he's got a press conference at 9:30 am Eastern today.
Let's see if he owns up to it like he did with Spygate.

I agree...The NFL should be responsible for all balls and both teams should be using the same balls...No reason the teams should be in charge of their own set of balls.....

At least similar to MLB. The home team supplies all of the game balls, but the umps/refs get them ready for the game. In baseball, the umps rub up the balls with mud, so they're not too slick or too gritty. The NFL can get the game balls from the home team, inspect them and get them out on the field. Gotta wonder about some of the shadiness of it. We straightened out the entire issue on AnaSci in a day and the NFL has been fucking it up for the past 44 years since the merger.

Plain ol' dumb.

Everyone knows they did it...Nothing's going to happen to them though because they aren't going to find any proof and you know no one is going to admit to it.....

Sure they did it and I'm a Pats fan (have been since I was born in New England 40 years ago), but this finger pointing needs to stop. Commentators on ESPN were saying nearly every QB has done it with the exception of Kurt Warner (who is a class act).

I mean are we really going to say the Pats were the only ones doing this as well as trying to steal play calls...I call bullshit on that.

Exactly but because everyone thats not a Pats fan hates them, that's the way it will be.

I wonder if the Colts would have even said anything about the balls if they suspected Manning and the Colts of doing it? Hell no!
