CHARLOTTE, N.C. — According to court records reviewed by Eyewitness News, investigators from the Drug Enforcement Agency's Charlotte field office obtained information Thursday about suspicious shipments sent from a Florida laboratory company to an apartment off Tacoma Street in West Charlotte. The shipments were sent to "Zifcak,", according to records.

DEA agents went to the apartment on Friday afternoon, and Alexander Zifcak answered the door. During a sweep of the property, investigators found two large beakers and 50 small glass vials full of a yellow liquid believed to be anabolic steroids, according to court filings. Investigators said the vials were capped for use with a syringe.

DEA agents also found a large crate believed to contain a pill press for the manufacture of controlled substances, according to court records.

Authorities arrested Zifcak Friday and charged him with manufacturing and possession with intent to distribute a schedule III controlled substance.

Black Horse Labs Steroid Bust in North Carolina

The Scotland County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) announced the dismantling of a sophisticated underground laboratory that manufactured anabolic steroids and other bodybuilding drugs in Laurinburg, North Carolina. The three-month investigation involved local and federal law enforcement agencies. The underground lab (UGL) was identified as “Black Horse Labs”.

SCSO Sheriff Shep Jones released details of the steroid bust during a press conference on August 19, 2014. Sheriff Jones, Sheriff's Lieutenant Jon Edwards and Sheriff's Captain James Pegues displayed the products seized during the raid for the benefit of the media. The “sophisticated” UGL enterprise was operating in a private Scotland County residence.

“This is a multi-state investigation and the majority of it led back to Scotland County,” said sheriff’s Lt. Jon Edwards.

Photographs published by the LauringburgExchange.com news website show what appears to be hundreds of vials of injectable steroids and bottles of oral steroids. Edwards and Jones also identified the seizure of various raw steroids powders and male performance enhancement drugs such as Viagra and Cialis.

Law enforcement officials were surprised to find two expensive pill presses capable of manufacturing thousands of pills per minute. Most steroid UGLs encapsulate their oral steroid products due to the significant restrictions involved in the acquisition of a pill press; the cost is prohibitive for most small-time UGLs; more importantly, pill presses are required to be registered with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

Edwards reported that no arrests have been made. Investigators are involved in the time-consuming task of reviewing the extensive records reportedly maintained by the UGL. The records contain details of customers sales as well as purchases of raw materials (powders) that presumably came from China. The SCSO has clearly implied that it has the details of the customers who used Black Horse Labs; this may or may not include email addresses and/or physical shipping addresses.

Based on the sales records, Edwards estimated that Black Horse Labs sold as much as $5,000 in steroids over the Internet alone. In addition, it is believed that the UGL's products were marketed locally in North Carolina.

“This is a big dent in the illegal steroid market,” Edwards said.

However, Edwards' assertion is debatable. Few people frequenting bodybuilding forums and websites have ever heard of Black Horse Labs suggesting the UGL is either a closely-guarded private lab with only a limited number of customers or that the UGL is a relatively minor player with a negligible market share in the illegal steroid marketplace.

Arrests related to the Black Horse Labs steroid bust are pending.

Rushville Steroid Bust Part Of Much Larger Operation, Police Say
August 15, 2014
By Steve Harmeyer
Evidence allegedly collected Tuesday at the Rush County home.
Evidence allegedly collected Tuesday at the Rush County home.

RUSHVILLE – Authorities raided a Rushville home Tuesday and discovered what federal agents call the largest anabolic steroid lab in Indiana history.
David Starkey, 39, and his wife Holly Starkey, 34, were charged with dealing a controlled substance along with four additional charges.
In newly filed court documents, David Starkey admitted to distributing steroids across the United States after a friend in North Carolina connected him with a guy named “Z” in Poland in 2013.
Z would pay him $10 per package of vile’s that he distributed and $5 per package of pills he would distribute for Z in the U.S, Starkey said. The Rush County man admitted that he later began manufacturing steroids and distributing them.
Starkey told police he figured it was illegal but with no money and no job, he had to “do what he had to do.”
Rushville Police, U.S. Postal Service Inspectors and the DEA worked together during the Starkey investigation. Court documents reveal they set up a controlled delivery Tuesday morning at the residence on E S.R. 44 in Rush County.
An undercover officer conducted a package delivery at the home. A minute after the delivery was made authorities served a search warrant at the house. Investigators say it led them to finding an active lab in the bedroom. Police said they found $9,058 at the home, which Starkey said some of the money is from drug proceeds but not the entire amount.
While David Starkey was at the Rushville Police Department his wife Holly, arrived and was later interviewed by investigators. According to court documents, she first denied there was an active lab in the bedroom and said she was unaware her husband’s involvement with illegal drugs.
She referenced the family may have had financial trouble and told investigators “she knew David was up to no good.”
Detectives say the Rushville suspects may be part of a much larger international operation with several moving parts and participants

I think med lab being watched as well as this guy was or snitched on to be honest . The quanity of items and type it sells has to red flag someone by now. Not everyone is in chemistry ordering a liter of ba or bb and filter assemblys. Id order somewhere else now a days. imo
